DO ACNE ADS DO MORE HARM THAN GOOD?
By Julia Rabuy

While some people yell at their screens while watching sports or the like, I accost my TV every time I see a commercial for whichever OTC Acne treatment is popular at the moment. I absolutely loathe how these ads portray those dealing with acne. One commercial, in particular, depicts a young woman fabricating excuses to avoid going out with her friends. Simply because she has acne.
Why in the world would I want to purchase a product from a company that intends to shame their consumers into buying what they are selling? Thank you, next.
And, just to be super clear, I am totally not against those attempting to aid their acne. I still get pimples on the regular, and I have some acne scarring. I’ve also had eczema and severely sensitive skin since I was a baby. I’m very aware of the insecurities that accompany skin issues, and I can completely understand the desperation felt by those suffering from such conditions. But, no one should ever feel ashamed about their skin, and no one should ever try to use someone else’s insecurities for profit. And remember, before trying any product to help with acne, please consult a dermatologist first, as they are the only people who can accurately assess what is going on with your skin.

Whether it’s eczema, acne, freckles, moles, Vitiligo, or any other skin characteristic, everyone should feel wholly comfortable in their own skin, which can be really tough, especially when the media is quick to shame those who have “imperfect” skin.
It’s vital to remember that no one, and I repeat, no one’s skin will ever be perfect because “perfection” is an unattainable construct. Though it may be difficult, we should all aim to embrace ourselves because there will never be another person like you ever to exist. We are all wholly unique and valid individuals.
If you’re looking for people embracing their “imperfections” or if you’re feeling really shitty about your skin, I *highly* recommend searching #SkinPositivity, #AcneIsNormal, #BareYourBirthmark, and #Freckles, on Instagram. I absolutely love the confidence of these people, and seeing others embrace their skin makes it so much easier to embrace your own!
Cheers xo
