STRESS MANAGEMENT

By Kasinda Lang

When I experience stressful situations, I recognize them differently, depending on the
type of stress that the situation causes for me. Most of the time, the stress is self-
producing. I think that I did this to myself because I wait until the last minute all the time
for every single assignment or paper. This is “productive stress,” meaning that this type
of stress actually makes me more motivated to complete the assignment. The closer
that I wait until the due date to write a paper or study for a test, the more motivation I
feel due to the pressure of having it completed in time. That may sound a bit weird, but
the adrenaline of writing a ten page paper from scratch in 2-3 hours is actually quite
productive, although it is also stressful. I have also studied for exams 1-2 hours before I
have to take them. These are examples of “productive stress,” and I have actually
(knock on wood) been doing well on my papers and exams with this method of handling
stress. However, this method of stress is not intentional-- I don’t choose to wait until the
literal last minute, it just happens because 99% of the time. I cannot force myself to do
homework ahead of time or early. I always just end up waiting until the last minute to
complete most tasks, and I am almost always proud of what I produce.

The students of ENG3120 are creating an online magazine that explores the concept of and provides outlets to maintaining healthy mentalities and overall wellness—a term which we define as: a state of wellbeing wherein individuals realize their own abiliities and can cope with everyday stresses in a safe and healthy manner.
