I DID IT AND SO CAN YOU

By Sara Felix

As college students, we are expected to balance our academic workload on top of our other
responsibilities. This makes it difficult to prioritize family and other relationships because our
role as students takes precedence. Cal Poly’s first semester, the Fall of 2019, was the most
challenging period of both my academic and personal life, yet I managed to stay on top of my
studies in addition to going through a heart-wrenching breakup. Here’s how:

           I...

       ● Prioritized my assignments in advance. Setting aside time to review my syllabi and set
realistic homework and study goals for myself in advance allowed me to feel secure when
           enjoying the “down time.”
      ● Celebrated ALL my accomplishments, no matter how small or seemingly-trivial. They
added up and giving myself permission to feel good about my hard work made me feel
          confident in my other abilities.
      ● Remained present. This was the most difficult for me, considering I was experiencing a
lot of negative emotions related to my ex, but I knew the assignments were still going to
be there. I constantly reminded myself to stay the in the moment and concentrate only on
the task in front of me.

So, if you feel overwhelmed, or begin to doubt your ability to succeed, remember: we are all
struggling, and, somehow, we all make it through.

Art With Impact

The students of ENG3120 are creating an online magazine that explores the concept of and provides outlets to maintaining healthy mentalities and overall wellness—a term which we define as: a state of wellbeing wherein individuals realize their own abiliities and can cope with everyday stresses in a safe and healthy manner.
