How important is finding products that are cruelty-free, ethically made, and/or vegan to you? Undergraduate students sent in their thoughts on the subject matter.

There's No Beauty in Cruelty

by Kyla Updegrove

Buying cruelty-free, vegan products is super important to me because I believe we vote every single day by how we spend our money—our money speaks even louder than our voices sometimes. I don’t believe in encouraging or supporting a company that practices something so out of line with my personal morals.

By choosing to buy products that are cruelty-free, we can say no to companies who are still using outdated testing methods on animals, and create a demand for ethical, cruelty-free products. We can change the industry by choosing to buy only from companies who uphold the things we value, so it’s incredibly important for us to be mindful of what we support and buy.

A Meaningful Change in the Beauty Community

by Karen Favela

To me, it is extremely important to find and buy products that are cruelty-free because I believe that we as humans are no better than any other animal. It does distress me to think that animals are being treated so poorly and used to make a product that isn’t even a necessity, just a want that many people have. I myself am a self-proclaimed makeup lover, and in the past, I never did look to make sure that the products I was using were cruelty-free or vegan. Being able to open my eyes and see the torture these animals go through... I couldn’t help but want to change what I was buying into and promoting.

Yes, using animals for testing was a common practice, but that’s just it. It was.

Now that the world has continued to progress, and we have tests that can substitute what an animal was used for, why would anyone want to harm these creatures? As much as this seems like a moral battle, it is so much more than that. The times have simply changed. I think people need to understand their impact on the planet, and that includes the products they use.

Art With Impact

The students of ENG3120 are creating an online magazine that explores the concept of and provides outlets to maintaining healthy mentalities and overall wellness—a term which we define as: a state of wellbeing wherein individuals realize their own abiliities and can cope with everyday stresses in a safe and healthy manner.
