OUR TOP SONGS
-
“Cut My Lip”- Twenty-One Pilots, Trench, 2018
-
“Bandito” - Twenty-One Pilots, Trench, 2018
These songs are a big reminder of whatever I am going though is temporary. Life comes in waves and I need to be able to ride along until the water becomes still again. At the end of the hard wave I will be okay and will grow from the experience.
-
“Start of the Breakdown”- Tears for Fears, The Hurting album, 1983.
-
“We Are the Champions”- Queen, News of the World album, 1977
These songs have helped me go through all the bad times of my life, although I heard the second song after my first year of college at Mt. Sac. Both of them have their own way of comforting and soothing me whenever I feel down.

“Simple Song”-The Shins, Port of Morrow, 2012
-
“Fake Plastic Trees”- Radiohead, The Bends, 1995
These songs, in one way or another, talk about the sense of not being a part of the world. It is difficult for some people to feel a sense of belonging, whether in society, a friend group or in their own family. I chose these songs because they remind me of abnormal characters or simply talk about people that have a difficult time dealing with themselves, but somehow come to terms with who they are. The songs also remind me that we are not alone in our search to find ourselves and the stranger we may seem to ourselves, at times, as we go on that journey.

“Holiday” - Madonna, Madonna, 1983
-
“Fantasy”- Mariah Carey, Daydream, 1995
Madonna (The Queen of Pop) has an overabundance of feel-good pop songs. Holiday, however was one of the first songs that started Madonna’s reign as pop supreme. You can’t help but dance away your troubles to this 80’s classic. It feels just like I’m roller skating in my high-waisted denim shorts on a summer day with a newfound boy toy.

“Ride”-Lana Del Rey, Paradise, 2012
-
“Soon We’ll Be Found”-Sia, Some People Have Real Problems, 2008
Lana is my favorite artist and I think that has a lot to do with the fact that she does not follow social guidelines and does whatever she pleases. Listening to her music really makes me realize and understand this. The second song was introduced to me by one of my best friends and ever since I have held it really close. I always listen to it when I feel sad or out of place, and somehow always seems to pick me back up. It goes without saying that music plays an important part in many people’s lives; but something that many people don’t usually look too far into is what different types of genre music they prefer to listen to when flustered with difficult situations. I like a variety of music but my favorite songs always have to deal with the sort of mood I am currently in.

“Breathe-Pink” Floyd, The Dark Side of the Moon, 1973
-
“Sunflower”- Post Malone & Swae Lee, Spider-Man: Into the Spider-Verse, 2018
Most of these songs help me through tough times because I have already established past memories with each one. When I have a tough day, I play these songs, and it helps me remember good times. Even if my troubles seem endless, by remembering a happy memory, it gives a silver lining to my present troubles.
